Panic Attacks can be experienced during the night whilst you’re asleep, causing you to wake up. This can happen if your brain is very alert due to levels of anxiety/stress and interprets small changes in your body acting as a sign of danger.

Experiencing a night time panic attack can be particularly frightening as you are more likely to feel confused about what’s happening. Night panic can make you feel even more helpless as you are unable to spot the usual signs of a panic attack beginning.

A person has panic attacks which are intense, overwhelming and often uncontrollable feelings of anxiety combined with a range of physical symptoms. A person having a panic attack may experience shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness and excessive perspiration. Sometimes, people experiencing a panic attack think they are having a heart attack or are about to die. If a person has recurrent panic attacks or persistently fears having one for more than a month, the person is said to have panic disorder.

What Is A Panic Attack

A panic attack is generally on the scale of anxiety but is felt in a different way and can sometimes be confused with general anxiety when suffering from a panic attack you experience a rush of intense psychological and physical symptoms. These can be frightening and can happen suddenly very often out of the blue for no clear reason. A panic attack will usually last between 5-20 minutes and sufferers feel as though they are in serious trouble, however, they are not dangerous and shouldn’t cause any physical harm.

Symptoms Of Panic

There are many symptoms of panic attacks but here are a few to look out for if you think you may be suffering from them:

  • Heart beating irregular also known as palpitations
  • Sweating
  • Trembling
  • Shortness of breath
  • Choking sensation
  • Chest pain
  • Feeling sick
Is A Panic Attack Dangerous

Although having a panic attack can be very scary and at the time of suffering one feel as though you are in danger or that something bad is about to happen they are in fact not dangerous and is just your body going into fight or flight mode in response to something you think is a threat. As your body tries to take more oxygen in your breathing becomes quicker.

How Long Do Panic Attacks Last

Typically most panic attacks last for between 5 and 20 minutes. They can come on very quickly and most sufferers symptoms have peaked within 10 minutes

Sometimes you may experience symptoms of a panic attack which could last for up to an hour. If you do experience this it is likely that you are experiencing one attack after another or a high level of anxiety after the initial panic attack you experienced.

When Do Panic Attacks Happen

With most cases of anxiety or panic it is different for every person experiencing them. You may yourself have a good understanding about the likely situations or triggers that start a panic attack. Some people are unaware of the triggers and feel that attacks come on without warning and happen at random.
